How to cancel Bitwarden
Free step-by-step cancellation guide
Cancelling is not deleting
Your vault, your items and your emergency contacts all survive a cancellation. Only the paid features stop, and this page lists exactly which ones.
What changes when Premium ends
| Feature | On the free plan |
|---|---|
| Advanced two-step login | YubiKey and Duo stop working. You are not locked out, because an authenticator app or email still gets you in. Your TOTP keys stay in the vault, but Bitwarden stops generating codes. |
| Encrypted file attachments | Nothing is deleted, but you cannot upload or download attachments. |
| Emergency access | Trusted contacts can still request and receive access. You cannot add or edit contacts. |
| Organizations | An organization moves to Disabled. Members, groups and shared items are kept, but members lose access to premium features and shared items until it is reinstated. |
A personal Premium subscription
The Bitwarden web app, vault.bitwarden.com
- Sign in to the web app.
- Go to Settings → Subscription.
- Note the Next charge date. That is when paid features stop.
- Select Cancel subscription.
- If you self-host Bitwarden, cancel from the web app and the server where the subscription was created.
An organization subscription
The Admin Console, as the organization owner
- Open the Admin Console.
- Go to Billing → Subscription.
- Note the Subscription expiration date.
- Scroll down and select Cancel subscription.
After you cancel
Nothing changes on the day you cancel. You stay on Premium until the Next charge date.
After that date the account reverts to the free plan and the features above stop. Your vault, logins, notes and folders are untouched.
To confirm it worked: the subscription page shows Pending cancellation and the Cancel button has been replaced by Reinstate subscription.
Refunds
- Within 30 days of the subscription being created, contact Bitwarden support for a refund. After 30 days a subscription is not eligible.
Frequently asked
Do I lose my passwords if I cancel?
No. Cancelling stops the renewal and the paid features. Your vault, items, folders and emergency contacts stay exactly as they are, and Bitwarden deletes nothing.
Where do I actually cancel?
In the web app, under Settings → Subscription for a personal plan, or the Admin Console under Billing → Subscription for an organization. Bitwarden does not cancel by phone or email.
Can I undo it?
Yes, any time before the Next charge date. Select Reinstate subscription on the same page and the renewal turns back on.
What happens to my two-step login?
YubiKey and Duo stop working on the free plan. You are not locked out of your vault, because an authenticator app or email still works, but if those are your only methods, set one up before the date arrives.
Should I delete my account instead?
Only if you want the vault gone. Deleting also stops the renewal, but every item in it goes with it. Cancel the subscription first if you plan to keep your data.
Can I get a refund?
Within 30 days of the subscription being created, contact Bitwarden support. Older subscriptions are not eligible.
I self-host Bitwarden. Does anything differ?
Cancel from the web app and from the server where you created the subscription, which may not be the same machine you are reading this on.
