How much do UK subscriptions really cost?
If you can't name what you pay every month across streaming, software and AI tools, you're not alone. There is no official statistic, so every figure you see comes from a survey. One of the most recent, from Aqua, published in October 2025, asked 2,000 people aged 16 and over and put the average at £786 a year, about £65.50 a month. Half of them spent under £40 a month, though, and one in ten spent £200 or more, so an average says little about your own number.
What holds up across all of them is the pattern. A small number of auto-renewing subscriptions feel insignificant individually, but together they form a real monthly line. And the ones you stopped using months ago can keep quietly charging you, simply because cancelling them was never a priority.
The typical costs add up fast
No single subscription looks expensive on its own, which is exactly why the category escapes scrutiny:
- Streaming: Netflix at around £13–£15 a month for a typical plan, Spotify Premium at about £12
- AI tools: ChatGPT Plus, US$20 a month, in the region of £16–£20 if you're billed in pounds
- Cloud storage, backup and productivity apps at a few pounds each
- Gym and fitness apps, magazine or news apps, and the odd one-off service
These are indicative UK prices as of August 2026 and change often, so it's worth checking the plan page before you rely on one. Two or three of them are £35 to £50 a month on their own. Add the rest, and £60+ monthly totals are completely ordinary.
Why annual numbers are the wake-up call
Monthly feels small; annual is the truth. One service at £11.99 a month is almost £144 a year. Four services at an average of £15 a month is around £720 a year. That is a meaningful line item in any household budget, and most people never see it written down anywhere.
The real leak is usually the forgotten renewal: a subscription you stopped using months ago, still quietly charging because it auto-renews and cancelling it was never a priority.
How to get your real number
The simplest fix is to write every subscription down once, with its renewal date and price, and look at the running total. A free subscription tracker like SubCrisp does exactly that: it tracks your subscriptions, shows your true monthly spend, warns you before a renewal, and can tell you what cancelling a service would actually save. No bank access and no ads, so it's private and honest. If you only want the number for now, the free subscription calculator adds it up in a minute, without signing up.
Note on the figures
There is no single official UK statistic for average subscription spend, and survey estimates vary by methodology and year. The average quoted above is from Aqua's survey of 2,000 people aged 16 and over, published on 31 October 2025 as "The UK's Subscription Service Spending in 2025" (figures checked October 2026). The prices shown are indicative UK retail levels as of August 2026 and change often. The number that matters is your own, and it only takes a few minutes to find out.
